Camaguey jumper Juan Miguel Echevarría assesses good his start to the season

Havana, Mar 19.- Jumper from Camaguey, Juan Miguel Echevarría, champion in Birmingham 2018, marked as good his start in the season, which will climax with the Tokyo Olympics.

I think I have done very well in these first months of the year, because together with my coach we gave ourselves the task of eliminating some problems that I had in the impulse race in 2019, and on the winter tour we were able to correct them, he told the ACN.

That led, he said, that the marks set in the current stage of preparation were met, so now it remains to continue working hard for future competitions, including the main one, the Olympic event in Japan, he said.

With a view to this very important event, we have planned a critical route with the participation in several stops of the Diamond League, but now with this pandemic we must wait to see what happens, said the bronze medalist at the universal outdoor competition in Doha, Qatar, last year.

I feel in perfect condition and with great confidence that it can be a great year for me, although I know that I should not neglect any detail in training to achieve my goals, said the monarch of the Lima 2019 Pan American Games.

So far this season, the young Cuban jumper made his big debut on February 21 in the last phase of the indoor track world tour, in Madrid, Spain, where he achieved the best record of the year with 8.41 meters (m).

Later, in a rally that hosted the city of Ulsteinvik, in Norway, he dominated the long jump with a record of 8.08 (m).

After those international presentations, Echevarría was ready to compete in the Cuba Athletics Cup that was to be held from 20 to 22 this month, but it was canceled as part of the prevention and confrontation actions against Covid-19.

According to a note from the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (INDER), for this reason the national tournaments agreed between March 18 and April 30, 2020 will not be started. (ACN) (Photo: File)
