Camagüey, Nov 12.- The use of insect pathogenic fungi, and other alternatives, to develop the biological control of pests, diseases and weeds, is part of the actions of the specialists of the experimental station of the Tropical Viand Research Institute ( INIVIT) in the Province of Camagüey.
In cassava, for example, a viand sometimes affected by a lepidopteran called "Primavera", the Trichogramma is used , a hymenopteran - an insect similar to a tiny wasp, which parasitizes the eggs of the aforementioned pest and slows its development.
The Primavera is a larva that, when hatching from the egg, is capable of devouring a plant in a single night, and therefore, causes serious damage to the entire plantation.
These biological controls are applications that flood the fields with a dosage of 30 thousand individuals per hectare, always at times when morning temperatures are cooler, and in favor of the air, to favor its dispersion in the fields, as this is how greater is achieved. effectiveness in eradicating, or at least alleviating the effects, the agronomist Mario Díaz López, director of that entity, explained to the ACN.
In addition, Bacillus thuringiensis , a soil-dwelling bacterium, specifically the LBT-24 strain, is used as a biological alternative to the pesticide, and in this case with a distribution of 10 liters per hectare.
Referring to sweet potato, another of the main crops currently promoted by INIVIT from Camaguey, Díaz López said that to combat Tetouan, an important damaging factor of this tuber, there are the fungi Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium anisopliae , used as pathogens.
We use them for the treatment of the so-called "shiny black" in the same plantations, which, although discovered in Cuba in 1979, since 2014 has shown remarkable resistance to different treatments, including chemicals, added the engineer.
The center also works on the management of Margaronia , which affects mainly the pumpkin, similar to a tiny white butterfly and affects the shoots, with a consequent degradation of the leaves, finally skeletonized with the appearance of being burned.
To counteract it, Trichogramma and Bacillus thuringiensis are also applied , said the specialist, but with a higher concentration of up to 20 liters per hectare on a weekly basis, since it is a lepidopteran that has developed a high resistance to chemical control.
The development of biological alternatives such as those explained above, becomes an ecological necessity not only in Camagüey to preserve the agricultural crops of viands but throughout the country, above all there is more value left from the situation of high humidity and the floods that it has left the passage through the country of tropical storm Eta.
Hence the necessary integration of INIVIT, the Soil Institutes, and the Entomophages and Entomopathogens Reproduction Centers (CREE) with agricultural producers, which, in addition to favoring yields, results in healthier organic food . (ACN ) ( Photo: File).
