Havana, Dec 14.- Cuban master Johannes García received the 2020 National Dance Award, awarded by the National Council of Performing Arts, in recognition of his professional work.
A jury chaired by the choreographer Alberto Méndez took into account the artist's prosperous career that began with the Cuban National Folk Ensemble, and influenced other companies of relevance in the world of dance in his country, such as the Maraguán Student Group.
In addition, this disciple of Alberto Alonso and Santiago Alfonso, founded in 1992 his own professional group, the Compañía de Danzas Folclóricas y Populares de Cuba JJ.
García has been artistic director and choreographer of the comparsa of the University Student Federation of this capital for more than 20 years and has held different positions related to his profession.
For his performance, the teacher has received different distinctions and awards, such as the Order for the National Culture of Cuba, the Lira Order of the Ministry of Culture of Bulgaria, and the Tropical Gypsy of the City of Havana.
The National Dance Award, instituted in 1998, is the highest award conferred by the National Council of the Performing Arts of Cuba, for the work of a lifetime. (Text and photo: PL)
