Buenos Aires, Dec 16.- In a speech in which he opted for more and better Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR), Argentine President Alberto Fernández called today to overcome the globalization of indifference and build the universalization of solidarity.
When speaking at the Summit of Presidents of the Mercosur States Parties and Associated States, Fernández advocated for the early incorporation of Bolivia into the bloc -in the process of accession-, and for a united alliance, with priority on those always postponed.
“In 2021 MERCOSUR turns 30 years old, an unbeatable age to combine courage with wisdom, hope with realism, imagination with pragmatism. I am counting on you to move forward together in the great solidarity pact that our peoples express today with a cry of a humanity that is wounded,” said the president, when he assumed the pro tempore presidency of the bloc.
During his speech, the Argentine head of state pointed out that his country bets on the region as a key to integral human development and described Mercosur as the most important regional political project for this nation.
It is a State policy and we feel that it is a vocation of our peoples, he told his peers from Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, after adding that he dreams of a different bloc, which has become a badge of sustainable development, technological innovation and above all of social inclusion.
The ruler stressed that more and better MERCOSUR means building an eco-friendly Mercosur and today there is the opportunity to consolidate that space as a low-carbon and sustainable regional model, taking care of forests, water reserves, creating new value chains linked to lithium, strengthening scientific cooperation.
“We must identify and implement actions that contribute to a sustainable and inclusive economic recovery,” he said at another point in his speech, in which he emphasized that “there is no successful regional integration with a failed social integration, nor a robust economy, with a destroyed internal economy.”
Regarding Bolivia, he was convinced that joining the bloc as a State Party will be an enormous achievement in this cycle and "a true milestone in the regional integration process that we must continue to deepen."
Underlining the importance of opening up to international trade while preserving the economy, he stressed that this alliance exports more than 120 billion dollars in food to the world and in the face of the challenges of the pandemic, it has the opportunity to play an important role in promoting more open agricultural trade.
On the other hand, he invited his peers "to dream of a common financial integration strategy, since in order to achieve complementary productive integration with more added value, it is not enough to just discuss tariffs." (Text and photo: PL)
