Cuban polo player second in Austrian Cup

Vienna, Dec 21.- Cuban polo player Raydel Martínez and his team Paris Lodron Salzburg Wasserball close the season today with the subtitle in the Austrian Cup, to be ratified among the four best clubs in the country since 1999.

Martínez and Salzburg could not take revenge on ASV Vienna and, as happened in the Bundesliga final, they gave up again, this time, with a score of 16 goals for six; to add the second prize in 2020 and the ninth runner-up in the local Cup.

We knew it was a difficult game, we started the first quarter well (2-3) but already in the second half we did not score (0-4) and it was decisive in the unfavorable result, as Vienna took control in the following periods (2 -3 and 2-6) and we could never go back, the Cuban international told Prensa Latina via WhatsApp.

In an active weekend, Salzburg advanced to the honor roll as second in group two after losing to WBV Graz 14-8 yesterday; They then beat WBC Tirol 13-12 key leader in the semifinals early this Sunday before losing the title challenge to ASV Vienna, this season's two-time champion.

For the Cuban international, these were his second playoffs in the first division debut of Austrian water polo and in the title clash he guided Salzburg's attack with three goals to dismiss the Cup with a total of seven.

The Cuban athlete described as positive the feelings of the debut with the Salzburg team in a season nuanced by the Covid-19 that required a lot of physical preparation before the reduction of the competition calendar.

In his opinion, participation in the two main Austrian championships contributed to his growth as a professional player, since at Salzburg he played both the defensive and attacking positions.

In total, Martínez played four games in the Bundesliga postseason and three in the Cup in this first year with the Salzburg team to display 13 goals.

The next season of the Austrian Bundesliga is scheduled to begin at the end of February 2021 and Salzburg will demand a greater role from Cuban Raydel Martínez. (Text and photo: PL)
